JOBY launches new lighting line at International Contemporary Furniture Fair
ICFF Booth # 1710; Hosting Launch Party at CITE May 14th 6-8 PM, 131 Greene St, New York

May 11, 2011, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFJOBY, the industry-defining creator of the bestselling GorillaPod tripod, today announces a pioneering new partnership – the JOBY | Peter Stathis Venture Collaboration – and introduces two new innovative lighting products. The Trapeze LED Table Light and Obus Indoor/Outdoor Light fuse Peter Stathis’ award-winning design and ground-breaking LED lighting technology with JOBY’s risk-taking, innovative approach to well-designed and precision engineered, yet playful consumer products.

The new line of lighting products will be unveiled at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF). The JOBY | Peter Stathis Venture Collaboration includes two movement–infused, sculptural lights that are engineered from the inside out and made to instantaneously engage the user by combining function with a sense of play.

Trapeze LED Table Light
The Trapeze LED Table Light presents a revolution in lighting.  Ignited by LED technology and patent-pending 360º pivot movement, it is available in two sizes: small and large. With sweeping, fluid motion that works across 3-axes, the counterweighted design allows for precise positioning. The cutting-edge flat-panel LED technology, pioneered and developed by Stathis and his group for the last several years, is the thinnest and most efficient flat-panel LED light engine currently on the market – allowing for the illumination of  large areas with brilliant, perfectly even, warm light.

Obus Indoor/Outdoor Light
Obus magically transitions between ambient and directional light to illuminate spaces indoors and out. A unique accent to any contemporary interior, the sculptural organic form produces even, warm ambient light. Once lifted, the portable Obus throws a concentrated beam through its base to direct light where needed.

JOBY | Peter Stathis Venture Collaboration
The new lighting products are designed for JOBY by Peter Stathis, winner of the Editors Award for Best Lighting two of the past three years at ICFF, and highly-decorated industrial designer and principal at Virtual Studio.

Born out of the progressive business culture of California, the JOBY | Peter Stathis Venture Collaboration presents new strategies for design and development, and has created a rule-breaking vision on where American Design is headed. By combining the supply chain infrastructure and speed to market of a consumer products company like JOBY with the deep creative vision of a designtrepreneur like Stathis, this partnership provides a new framework for creating and launching innovative new products in the world of contemporary interior and furniture design.

“The remarkable thing about the JOBY | Peter Stathis Venture Collaboration,” states Peter Stathis, “is not just the quality of the end result, or the sheer pace of its development, but the fact that this kind of technical, typological, and aesthetic innovation would only have been achieved by getting a seemingly very disparate group of highly individualistic and entrepreneurial design and business creatives together around one table. It's a very California thing.”

“JOBY is willing to embrace risk and question the norms of both the design and the consumer products worlds, just as our products reframed the photography industry,” states JOBY CEO Forrest Baringer-Jones. “The desire to be part of this new approach to design grows out of two key company tenants; our ongoing relationship with a wider community of brand ambassadors and our commitment to LED lighting technology in the torch and photography worlds.”

The relationship between JOBY and Peter Stathis emerged as a result of an event co-curated by JOBY which took place in 2009. The event asked designers, including Stathis, to reinterpret the components behind JOBY’s products and brand. Inspired by the results of that initial venture and the recognition of a shared commitment to design and next generation LED lighting technology, JOBY and Peter Stathis joined forces to create a new form of partnership.

Both Trapeze and Obus are scheduled to be available for retail sale in August.
